A week vacation can allow you to indulge in several body relaxing and rejuvenating activities, how much more in a four-month vacation.

But if you do not have four months, you can choose not to go on the whole trip. These types of cruises are flexible in a sense that you can choose to go on just small parts of it called world cruise segments. But you will have to fly to a port of call which can be anywhere in Europe or Asia. Beyond the air travel time and cost, cruise segments are the perfect solution for travelers who don’t have enough time to match the entire length of a voyage around the globe yet want to see the far-flung places that such voyages go to. Traveling on Trains

Posted by Ndre on Mar-21-2009

In various countries, the train is one of the most preferred public transportation utilities for long travel on land. Aside from the speed, it is also convenient, accessible and is available at a very affordable fare.

If you are planning to visit a relative or leaving the town for a vacation and you decided to travel by train, here are some things to remember to make your trip expedient and no-hassle at all.

1. Reservations. Just like in airlines, long travel on trains also needs reservation. While you can buy a ticket at the date of your departure, booking your trip in advance will ensure guaranteed seat. This is very important if you are traveling in group and with children.

2. Schedules. In any given situation, knowing the departure time of the train will help greatly in your preparation. On the other hand, knowing the estimated time of arrival gives your expectant hosts an idea on when to pick you up.

3. Pre-Departure Checklist. These are the important things and documents that must be with you when you travel. You must ensure that you have your identifications and tickets that you can easily access. Other must-have includes Health and Medical Precautions and Travel Insurance.

4. Baggage. Most trains require a certain number of luggage that you must bring. More often than not, the count of baggage is per person/passenger. Make sure to check the train’s baggage guidelines to avoid bringing unacceptable things on board.

5. Meals. While most trains allow passengers to bring food and beverages, long travel that takes days also requires you to eat. Trains offer meals that you can inquire in advance.

6. Entertainment. Long travel can be boring. It is advisable that you bring some personal and entertaining items that can use during your travel. Some of the recommended entertaining stuff include deck of cards, board games, magazines and books, travel journal as well as CD or DVD player (with headphones), crossword puzzles and coloring books for children, etc. You may also bring pillow and blanket that you can use if want to sleep.

7. Capture the Moments. In any trip, make sure that you have your gadget to capture the moments. It can be a cellular phone with built-in cameras, digital cameras or video camcorder.

The things to remember when traveling on train are not really different from traveling on planes. Nevertheless, the rules and policy may have a huge difference so inquiring in advance to your chosen train service is an essential part to make your travel hassle-free and really exciting.

Choose a Right Hotel

Posted by Ndre on Mar-20-2009

“No way I can’t afford to stay there” Think again. Let me tell you how you CAN.

The key is the right travel agency site. Travelocity has been good to me over the years. Next, don’t settle for the first hotel that seems sort of decent. Pictures are very deceiving and the reality once you get there is ten times worse.

Here’s a good way to decide. Whatever the vacation budget is, stick to it. Browse hotels within that range and be sure that’s what you want. Read the reviews, look at the amenities they provide view all the pictures and don’t forget to see what the cost might be to upgrade. You will be surprised at what a few more dollars a night will get you. Read the room descriptions very carefully. On some sites a simple, innocent statement like: “Partial view of ocean from the left window from small balcony” translates into reality to mean, “If you step out onto a two foot balcony and lean all the way out almost to where someone needs to hold on to a leg, you may see the ocean across a much closer view of roof tops or the ventilation units”; read between the lines.

On the other hand if you read something like “Ocean front view from your balcony deck chair or Jacuzzi balcony” You are probably going to be blown away by the view you get and the rest of the hotel amenities.

Read between the lines as you choose;

“Hotel on the beach” and “Hotel close to beach”is a language twister all in itself!

On the beach is exactly that, a private beach leading off the hotel grounds with umbrellas and comfy beach chairs and refreshment service to your beach chair.

Close to the beach could be anything. A public beach across the street, a beach that requires you to walk down a multitude of winding stairs to get to it, maybe even a beach the size of your back yard. Rocks everywhere and swimming is prohibited in the ocean, and a pool no bigger than a compact car parking space. I’ve seen it all and not enjoyed it all.

“Smoking rooms” This is a touchy one. One needs to be very careful because if you don’t smoke the lingering scent of a week ago’s smoke will still be there. My experiences of  hotels both in the US and beyond that offer ” No Smoking Rooms” does not necessarily mean smoking has never occurred in the room. It just might mean not this week! They seem to go by the rule of if it has been cleaned, and then it can now be a non-smoking room.

Look for Hotels that offer No Smoking floors or are a No Smoking facility period. That usually works out. Just be sure to reiterate your non-smoking requirement as you check in so you don’t have to deal with the whole room change dilemma as this only takes away from some sun beach time!

Easy Vacation Accommodations

Posted by Ndre on Mar-15-2009

Accommodations are, short of transcontinental airfare, your biggest expense on any trip or vacation. Even with a depressed economy, hotels and inns are still what they’ve always been – expensive. Short term rentals are an easier option for accommodations, especially if you won’t be there more than a couple of weeks. Here’s a quick guide to pulling it off.

Have an Itinerary

First and foremost, you should have a defined itinerary, or at least a definite date when you’ll be in a particular city or area. Short term rentals are usually agreed upon for very specific periods and dates; some hosts will even require you to put in an expected time of arrival and departure. Very few will be willing to deal with a lodger without a schedule.

Seasoned travelers usually pad their schedule with one day before and after their planned itineraries, and it might be a good idea for you too. This gives you a little room in your schedule to relax after the flight, just lie around or maybe take an unscheduled walk around the area.

Make a Budget

Although they’re often defined as ‘affordable,’ the prices for short term rentals can vary as widely from $50 to several hundred dollars. Unless you have very deep pockets and are doing short term rentals only for kicks, setting a budget for your accommodation costs is a good idea, lest you run out of money mid-trip.

If you plan to live exclusively on short term rental places, a daily budget of about $150 to $200 should get you a pretty nice room. Keep in mind that this is still a game of real estate, and that a $150 room in a sleepy New Jersey suburb will look vastly different from a similarly priced room in the bustling heart of Manhattan.

Find a Spot

When you’re having a vacation or going on a tightly scheduled trip, the location of your digs and its proximity to other establishments is crucial. Look up the places you intend to visit and then plot them out on a map. Find an area in the city which would roughly be easily accessible to those places as well as things like major roads and train stations.

Look for Sites

Formal sites with administration and a feedback system are the best and safest places to look for short term rentals. Regular classified ads are okay too, except that you don’t get to see who else has rented with that particular host before. The advantage of going to a formal, members-only site is the feedback system and images that usually come with each posting. You’re not left in the dark about either your host or the place you’re renting.

As you can see, short term rentals involve a little more work and patience than the usual route of going to a hotel. In the process, however, you stand to save hundreds of dollars in accommodation costs, especially if you’re traveling alone or with just one other person. If it’s affordable digs you’re after, these short-term arrangements are the perfect answer.
